The CHC Trainer is happy to provide customised training sessions for you and your colleagues. Popular training topics are listed below, but you are welcome to request your own by contacting chctrainer@ebsco.com.

  • Introduction to CHC: If you have team members that are unfamiliar with what’s available on the CHC, this is the session for them. The session will provide an overview of the resources and will also cover some basics of searching within CHC.
     
  • Earning CPD credits using CHC resources: Find out about ways to track and claim CPD credits using resources on the CHC. All the resources can be accessed from home for your professional development work done outside of work hours.
     
  • PICO search strategy: This session will show how to streamline the research process using the PICO search strategy. PICO is a mnemonic used to describe the four elements of a sound clinical foreground question - Patient/Population, Intervention, Comparison and Outcomes. The question needs to identify the key problem of the patient, what intervention or treatment you are considering for the patient, comparisons of alternative interventions or treatments, and the desired outcome to promote or avoid.
     
  • Thesaurus term search: MeSH (Medical subject headings) is the US National Library of Medicine's controlled vocabulary thesaurus. Each bibliographic reference is associated with a set of MeSH terms assigned to describe the content of an article. MeSH terms (or thesaurus terms) can be used to perform a targeted search, and you can learn how to perform this advanced searching in this session.
     
  • CHC’s Drug information: This session will introduce a couple of drug databases and also demonstrate DynaMed in greater detail which includes generic drug topics, lab monograph information, drug review topics (e.g. Biologic DMARDs for Rheumatoid Arthritis), drug overview topics (e.g. Anticoagulation Overview), drug interaction checker and drugs A – Z list.
     
  • Reading medical journals: This session will cover how to find medical journals available through the CHC and read articles from specific journals. You will also learn how to set up an alert for new volumes and how to search within a publication.
     
  • Searching for mental health related articles: Learn the advanced searching skills to find mental health related information available in CHC’s databases. This session will cover special field code searching, applying special limiters, how to perform thesaurus term searching and have a look at the information included in the detailed record page.
     
  • Keeping on top of new articles: Using search alerts & journal alerts functionality: This session explains how to stay informed about newly released articles by learning how to set up search alerts and journal alerts, and how to save a search strategy.
